Buchanan and McKinley Elementary applied for and were awarded a Reading First grant in April 2003. The goal of Reading First is to have all students reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. In addition to extensive staff development, this program has required a 90-minute reading block for all students in grades K-3. Students who are not at grade level receive additional time in reading. Funds from this grant have enabled us purchase numerous supplemental books, a mobile computer lab, SMARTboards, and reading software. Two Reading Coaches were also hired to work with staff at the two Reading First schools: Jennifer Nedrebo focusing on kindergarten and first grades. Doris Stiles focusing on second and third grades. We are currently in our 6th and final year of Reading First funding so our focus for this year is on sustainability of the system. |
